Chapter I · What you’ve noticed
It is usually small things, and you have been talking yourself out of them.
- A story you have heard three times this week.
- A fridge that is a little too empty.
- Mail that is stacking up unopened.
- The garden, the book club, the weekly call, all quietly dropped.
- And you, worrying more than you are saying out loud.
Chapter II · What they say
You have already heard all of this.
Keep going. These are the three sentences families repeat back to me most often.
“I’m okay.”
They mean“I don’t want to be a burden.”
“Don’t worry about me.”
They mean“I don’t want you to see how hard it has gotten.”
“You don’t have to come today.”
They mean“Please come today.”
Nobody is lying to you. Both of you are protecting the other one, and that is why the conversation never starts.

Most families feel exactly what you’re feeling right now.

The community pays a referral fee when someone moves in. That is how this work is paid for, and I would rather you hear it from me than wonder about it.

Brooks Friedland
He was an EMT on San Juan Island before he ever sold a house. He has been licensed in Washington since 1998, lives in Birch Bay, and now spends his time helping families work out what comes next for a parent.
