Chapter I · The words

Nobody arrives knowing this vocabulary.

You have probably heard four or five of these terms in the last month, from a doctor, a sibling, a neighbour who went through it. They sound interchangeable. They are not, and the difference matters.

So here is what the words mean. Not so you can decide alone, but so you are not learning the language and making the decision in the same conversation.

Chapter II · The five

Where Brooks places families.

Mostly independent

55+ communities

Ordinary homes and apartments, with neighbours in a similar season of life. No care is built in. People choose these for the company and for less house to look after, often years before anyone is thinking about help.

Independent, with the chores handled

Independent living

Your parent keeps their own apartment and their own routine, but meals, housekeeping, maintenance and transport are somebody else's job. There is usually a dining room, and there are usually people to eat with.

This is often the move families wish they had made a year earlier.

Help with the day

Assisted living

The same private apartment, with staff on hand for the parts of the day that have become hard. Dressing, bathing, getting to meals, keeping track of medication. How much help, and when, varies enormously between communities.

That variation is most of why this is worth talking through rather than comparing on a website.

Built for memory loss

Memory care

Secured, purpose-built settings with staff trained for dementia and Alzheimer's. The building itself is designed around the condition, which is the part families do not expect until they walk into one.

Families usually arrive at this one carrying guilt. It is worth saying plainly that wanting your parent somewhere safer is not giving up on them.

Clinical, around the clock

Skilled nursing

Licensed nursing care, available all day and all night. Sometimes this is where someone goes after a hospital stay and then moves on. Sometimes it is where medical needs have outgrown everywhere else.

This is the one with the shortest fuse, because it is often decided from a hospital bed on a discharge planner's timeline.

Chapter III · Which one

This page cannot tell you which one your parent needs.

And you should be wary of anything that says it can from five questions and a postcode. The honest answer depends on things no website knows: how the last six months have actually gone, what your parent will and will not accept, what the family can carry, and what is genuinely available near you right now.

Most families are somewhere between two of these five, and the right answer is often not the one they came in assuming.
